Performance Control

Industrial combustion plants have a significant environmental footprint.

  • The consumption of fossil fuels results in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and the lower the energy efficiency of an installation, the higher the CO2 emissions.

Local regulations may require minimum values for the performance of the facility. Depending on the number of combustion appliances installed and the overall size of the facility this can require different approaches to measurement and regular testing. A typical boiler plant may only require emissions monitoring at planned burner maintenance intervals, larger plant may require continuous monitoring and logging.

  • Depending on the fuel, other pollutants may be emitted in addition to CO2. The most common for liquid and gaseous fuels are carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx) plus dust and particulates (more relevant for liquid fuels).

Local regulations may also require emission limit values for installations. In Europe, the Medium Combustion Plant Directive (the MCPD) imposes detailed emission limits. These regulatory controls are applied throughout Europe based on local implantation of the regulations which can often impose stricter controls.
