Good Loop: First results

The GOOD LOOP concept aims at reducing NOx emissions due to industrials burners. This concept is an exclusive technology developed by the Babcock Wanson burner department, supported by ADEME, and based on an internal flue gas recirculation system.

Introduced on the market in 2022, GOOD LOOP comes in the form of a compact kit, positioned upstream of the economiser where applicable, and can reduce Nox emissions by 20 to 30 mg/Nm3 from our two-stage boilers running on natural gas. The innovative nature of the GOOD LOOP concept lies in the direct injection of recycled flue gases into the combustion chamber by a dedicated additional fan.

Now, after the industrialisation phase and initial commissioning (with simplified integration of external recirculation), feedback has enabled us to present the first evaluations of the real, in situ performance of the GOOD LOOP concept.

Last March, our Dutch subsidiary Reputabel supplied one of its customers in the food industry with a NBWB 100A boiler equipped with an Optimo 1-CN burner and fitted with the GOOD LOOP kit.

Because of the very strict regulations governing Nox emissions in Holland, the Nox emission targets for this flue-tube boiler running on natural gas had been set at 70 mg/Nm3.
The results measured were very satisfactory, with levels below 65 mg/Nm3.

Also in March, in a completely different context, an NBWB 200A boiler with an Optimo 1-EQ burner and fitted with the GOOD LOOP kit was delivered to New Caledonia for a customer in the food industry producing fish flours.

As this fire-tube boiler runs on kerosene, Nox emission targets had been set at 150 mg/Nm3 (liquid fuels emit more NOx than gaseous fuels). The results measured were also satisfactory, with levels below 130 mg/Nm3.

Babcock Wanson is a committed player in the energy transition and, as such, has made it its mission to reduce the environmental impact caused by the production of steam and hot water for industrial use.

Nox emissions are a direct consequence of the combustion generated by the burner associated with the boiler. Thanks to its significant impact on the environmental performance of the boiler, the GOOD LOOP concept is an innovative and effective solution for reducing nitrogen dioxide emissions.

With the GOOD LOOP concept, Babcock Wanson is making a further contribution to the fight against pollutant emissions from industrial steam boilers.
