Both fire tube and coil type steam boilers have the same goal: to produce ‘dry’ saturated steam to maximise the delivery of heat to the user. Both types of boiler operate along the same basic principles in that water is confined in a restricted space and is heated by burning a fuel source. The energy of combustion is transferred from the flame to the water by radiation and conduction, heating the water and ultimately raising steam. However, the means of heating the water to the point of ‘dry’ steam are markedly different.
What are these boilers best suited to?
Whilst there has been a gradual move away from steam generation technology as the most popular industrial process heating method, there are many applications where steam boilers cannot be matched:
- Where both direct and indirect heating are required simultaneously
- Where heat transfer at a constant temperature is required, with high heat transfer rates (due to the latent heat given up during condensation).
- For heating large quantities of process hot water, due to steam boilers’ stable and efficient heat transfer at lower temperatures.
It takes exceptional expertise to design and manufacture steam boilers and, more importantly, to provide the engineering support and staff necessary for a successful installation. Very few manufacturers have this ability. Babcock Wanson has it in abundance!
