Thermal Deaeration

Standard: Treated water flow from 2 to 30 m3/h
Specific: Tailored to your demand

Thermal Deaeration is a water treatment technology based on Henry’s Law. Henry’s Law states that the amount of dissolved gas within a liquid is proportional to the partial pressure of the gas in the gas phase. Dissolved oxygen and other dissolved gases can be removed from water by increasing the water temperature and the pressure and this is achieved in our Thermal Deaerator by steam injection.

Babcock Wanson designs and manufactures custom Thermal Deaeration equipment to perfectly complement your installation. Thermal Degassing, by removing all kinds of dissolved gases from water, reduces the requirement for chemical treatment and thereby ensures equipment’s longevity, maintains steam quality and reduces operating costs.

Pressurised Thermal Deaerator

A pressurised thermal deaerator, operating at circa 0.3 barg allows the temperature of the water to be raised to around 105°C making it possible to obtain water of excellent quality with very low oxygen content (lower than 0.01 mg/l) and is used for installations which operate at high output and pressure.

The design by Babcock Wanson optimises the removal of dissolved gases. A deaeration column is mounted above a storage vessel. Steam is injected into the storage vessel, maintaining the pressure and temperature of the water and rises up through the deaeration column where the large surface area allows the contact required between the incoming water and steam to drive the dissolved gases out of the water. The resulting gases along with a small quantity of carrier steam are exhausted from the top of the column. The feed water obtained is of very high quality and suitable for most applications.

Atmospheric Deaerator

This alternative design, which gives a performance close to the thermal deaerator (0.1mg/l) but without the technical demands of a pressurised vessel is well suited to boilers of medium output and pressure and provides a very economical alternative to just using chemical treatment for oxygen scavenging.

The operating conditions are similar to those of the thermal deaerator, but the deaeration tower and its fittings are replaced by a simpler dome installed on the top of the feed water tank with a specially constructed dip pipe within the tank.

Thermal Deeaeration application in industries

Water quality is an important factor in ensuring the durability of process equipment, most notably for steam boilers. Unless treated, water will contain dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide, which are active corrosion agents that can damage carbon steel. It is therefore essential to limit the quantity of these constituents to avoid degradation.

Thermal Degassing equipment from Babcock Wanson removes dissolved oxygen and other gases from water and thus helps eliminates the corrosion risk. Babcock Wanson offers an expertise in boiler water treatment and provides its knowledge to accurate calculation of ROI (Return of Investment).

Simple Installation

Thermal Degassing can be site installed or provided as an integrated skid mounted arrangement allowing simple and fast installation.

Environmentally Friendly

Thermal degassing is a physical alternative to simple chemical treatment to remove dissolved gases. It can dramatically reduce the chemical demand of the process and helps reduce site chemical handling requirements and waste disposal needs.

Reliability and Safety

  • Thermal degassing helps reduce overall operating costs and any environmental impact from the chemical treatment of the feed water.
  • Very low oxygen content of less than 0.05 mg/l or 0.01 mg/l depending on the technology employed.
  • Thermal Deaeration reduces the risk of oxygen corrosion and at the same time minimises operating cost.
  • Keeping the feed water supply at the highest possible temperature enhances boiler plant performance by reducing the energy demand at the boiler.
